Request Guidelines

"I need a thing!"

These are general guidelines for submitting a +request, especially one where you want to use your PC's game mechanics for something. Examples:

  • I want to look for forensic evidence related to _____
  • I want to look at that guy's aura to see if he's lying about _____
  • I want to create a magic item that does _____
  • I want to magically improve an existing item to do _____ better

Does it need a +request at all?

If it's part of someone's PRP:

  • You can just run it by them, and whatever answer they give is generally fine. (+policy prps, +policy hand waving)
  • Either of you can always choose to submit a +request, to ask for staff assistance and/or just give staff a heads up. If you do, then please state that it's for a PRP, and who's running it.

Otherwise:

  • Some things can just be answered via channels (Newbie for common stuff, Rules for more obscure stuff).
  • Paging on-duty staff is OK, but should be reserved for high-priority issues. For other issues, +request gives more staff a chance to review the situation, makes it less likely to be accidentally overlooked, and is also archived offline after the job is closed (in case staff wants to refer back to it later).

If you're not sure, then just use your best judgment. Staff may suggest adjustments as appropriate.

Does it have its own command to submit it?

+request creates a job in staff's generic REQ bucket. If you're not sure what's appropriate, then this is fine. (Staff can move it to a different bucket.)

Here are additional commands that create jobs in different buckets:

Command Concept Bucket
+approveme Initial approval of a new PC APPS
+bug Code bugs CODE
+buildreq On-grid build projects BUILD
+equipreq +equip items EQUIP
+harpyreq Harpy scandal HARPY
+pitch Long-shot suggestions PITCH
+renownreq Shifter renown REN
+typo Typos in room descs, etc. BUILD
+xp/nom Recommending that others gain XP NOM
+xpreq Spending XP XP

What's your end goal?

If it's just one step toward a larger goal, then please state what that larger goal is. Staff may suggest a better way to pursue it, or alternatively that it may not work anyway for some other reason.

What are you trying to use?

Please state what stat(s) you're using.

  • If it's a power where different levels do different things, then please state the name and level of the power, e.g. 'Auspex 2' rather than just 'Aura Perception'. (Staff may not recognize the latter.)
  • Watch out for things with similar names, e.g. Persuasion (secondary talent) vs 'Persuasion (gift)' vs 'Clever persuasion' (optional Rite of the Fetish modifier). (Even if you describe it correctly, staff may inadvertently get them mixed up, in which case don't feel bad about pointing out the oversight.)
  • If you're not sure what stats are appropriate, then check Dramatic Systems.
  • If you're still not sure, then just describe it in conceptual terms as best you can.
  • If you think you know what stats are appropriate, then go ahead and proceed. Staff will reinterpret results and/or request re-rolls if needed.

Where do your modifiers come from?

If something is affecting the number and/or difficulty of your dice, then please clearly describe what that something is, where it comes from, and what effect it has. (Staff may not remember all your details; remember that staff deals with everyone, not just you. Also, if something appears to be off, then providing full details makes it easier to figure out which part and why.)

Examples:

  • I get +2 dice because of power _____
  • I get -2 diff because of +equip number _____
  • I get +1 die and -1 diff because of my Home Base's _____

If you're spending a pool stat, then do:

+lose _____

and then mention on the job that you did so. Later, whenever it would be ICly appropriate, you can do:

+gain _____

e.g. '+gain Willpower' after getting a good night's sleep.

Please do these things before you roll dice, unless something specifically says that you can spend something after the roll.

How do I roll dice?

Again, please declare spends and other modifiers first, unless something specifically says that you can spend something after the roll.

Also, if you're doing multiple things on one job, then please clearly describe which is which. Examples:

  • I'm rolling _____, then _____, then _____
  • I'm rolling for _____ on the lobby, the office, and the basement, in that order

To roll dice for a job, do:

+roll/job (job number)=(stuff)

Please do not roll to the room, then submit a scene log and ask staff to take it on faith that the log wasn't doctored. (Exception: If a member of staff directly witnessed the original roll.)

I rolled dice, now what?

'+myjobs' provides a list of your open jobs. If one goes overdue without staff response, then it's okay to comment and check up on it:

+myjob/add (job number)=(comment)

Note that many jobs involve players and staff discussing back and forth for a while, and due dates are not always updated consistently. If one hasn't picked up any new comments for a week or more, then it's okay to comment and check up on it.
