What is a television apparatus to man,

who has only to shut his eyes and see the

most inaccessible regions of the seen and the never seen,

who has only to imagine in order to

pierce through walls and cause all the

planetary Baghdads of his dreams to rise from the dust.

RP Hooks
Bestseller Book Club
Mariava published her first novel, The County of Rising Shadow, in 2011. Though targeted at a young adult audience, it attracted readers of all ages at all demographics. The story was a classic one, an epic faerie tale about a dark prince and a terrible, sentient darkness. The heroine, the young ruler of a beautiful kingdom, barely won out in the end against those forces and at terrible cost, as her champion perished in mortal combat against enemy forces. It reached high on the New York Times Bestseller List, and received a lot of glowing praise from critics.

Money, Money, Money

The Carmichaels are old money. Big money. Economically and politically they exist in the same realms as the Kennedys and the Trumps, the Coxs and the Pritzkers. They largely avoid the tabloids by being low-key and above scandal, but no family is without its dirty little secrets and its connections. Though Mariava is young, she's left a lot of the politicking and moneymaking to her elder brothers and begun to dabble in the arts and philanthropic causes. Trying her wings on the West Coast, on the fringes of her family's very large sphere of influence, she could be a good connection for someone looking for a patron. Or a mark.

The Psychic Connection

Mariava is young and her psychic abilities are both poorly developed and poorly controlled. They like to manifest at the most inopportune times without her consent or even her awareness. Maybe you'll spot her having one of her episodes; maybe one of her random flashes of insight concerns you? Maybe you lost something and she found it; maybe you just saved her from walking in front of a bus?

Novel Concepts
The County of Rising Shadow - 2011
One part fairytale and one part love story, loved by most but sometimes denounced by critics as being too allegorical and too dark for its target audience. Perspective alternates between the heroine, a young queen with little leadership experience, and an even younger... something. In the beginning they seem to be entirely different stories, connected only tangentially by setting. The faerie attempts to navigate the waters of court life and politics, particularly in a sticky negotiation with a neighboring kingdom whose ambassador is a decorated war hero. The other conscience develops over time, learning about the nature of the world through exposure to strong emotion - hate, greed, jealousy - and the nightmares of the common people. As the Shadow, as it comes to be called, develops it grows, building strength: it overwhelms a young pregnant woman and mingles its essence with her own, claiming the child. Upon birth, the boy grows to adulthood in less than a year, becoming the voice of the Shadow. Its influence spreads; things of nightmare rise to wage open war against the bright kingdom. The queen, meantime, falls in love with the ambassador, who becomes her champion in the third act. He, tragically, falls to the Shadow, which is eventually fought back but not killed. The ending is bittersweet, and many speculate that she left it open-ended in order to make room for a sequel.
