  • I have not committed sin.

Keep the Litany. Keep Ma'at.

  • I have not committed robbery with violence.
  • I have not stolen.
  • I have not stolen grain.
  • I have not purloined offerings.
  • I have not stolen the property of the gods.

The theft of the property of another is against the will of the gods. The possessions of the just and honorable must be respected, as must the spirits and the gods and their dominions.

  • I have not uttered lies.
  • I have not carried away food.
  • I have not uttered curses.
  • I have not committed adultery. I have not lain with men.
  • I have made none to weep.
  • I have not eaten the heart.

Purity of the body and spirit are of utmost importance. Purposeless lies blacken the soul, as does the vain practice of black sorcery (a literal interpretation of "curses"), empty and purposeless sexual congress (Cris admits to being notoriously bad at this one), acts of cruelty, and indolent depression when determined action is called for.

  • I have not attacked any man.
  • I am not a man of deceit.
  • I have not stolen cultivated land.
  • I have not been an eavesdropper.
  • I have slandered no man.
  • I have not been angry without just cause.
  • I have not debauched the wife of any man. (This one is repeated twice for emphasis)

Some of these tenets seem inimical to being a Bastet. But using subterfuge and underhanded tactics against an honest man is different than doing so against a Pentex executive or a Follower of Set. The final tenet means that relationships with others need to be respected.

  • I have not polluted myself.

Reflected in the Litany. The abuse of drugs is to be avoided. Wyrm Taint, while difficult to avoid entirely for a Bubasti, is to be counteracted through Rites of Cleansing and rituals of purification.

  • I have terrorised none.
  • I have not transgressed the Law.
  • I have not been wroth.

Violence against others out of spite is against the will of the gods. Cats can be capricious and cruel, but as the song says, "I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it."

  • I have not shut my ears to the words of truth.
  • I have not blasphemed.
  • I am not a man of violence.
  • I am not a stirrer up of strife (or a disturber of the peace).

An admonishment to listen to the wisdom of one's elders, to keep the covenants with the spirits and the gods, and to temper one's rage.

  • I have not acted (or judged) with undue haste.
  • I have not pried into matters.
  • I have not multiplied my words in speaking.
  • I have wronged none, I have done no evil.

Measure one's actions out with wisdom when possible. Look before you leap, be forthright where called for, and don't screw with people without a damn good reason for it.

  • I have not worked witchcraft against the King (or blasphemed against the King).
  • I have never stopped [the flow of] water.
  • I have never raised my voice (spoken arrogantly, or in anger).
  • I have not cursed (or blasphemed) God.
  • I have not acted with evil rage.
  • I have not stolen the bread of the gods.
  • I have not carried away the khenfu cakes from the Spirits of the dead.
  • I have not snatched away the bread of the child, nor treated with contempt the god of my city.
  • I have not slain the cattle belonging to the god.

The Bastet (and the Bubasti in particular) are favored by Gaia and the gods. This comes with a responsibility to act in a becoming manner. Nature is to be respected and defended, Elders are to be respected, benevolence (in a catlike manner) is to be sought out, and the gods and spirits are to be propitiated as is their due, as are the spirits of the restless dead.
