Howland came to his reward in 2003. He was 29 years old.
His sire, the elder Minnie Carr, was herself very young for her generation - having only been embraced in the late 1830s in what was then the Republic of Texas. Few people know why Ms. Carr chose to embrace Howland. If the man himself knows, he's not telling. For a decade he served as his sire's companion in Phoenix but the relationship eventually soured under conditions as mysterious as his embrace.
